Notes on a Podcast

Okay. need to sit down and do it this week for real. I keep saying I'm going to do it and then I don't. It's like I'm waiting for that inspiration to just hit me over the head....only I know that I'll be waiting another month if I keep doing that.

I have several episodes planned out in my head but a lot of them involve coordination with people so I usually put those off. Procrastination FTL.

I do start to feel that pang of guilt as the monthly marker starts to roll around and I'm like "hmmmm, wait for it...wait for it".....[podfade comments].... "there they are!"

So...what the hell. you guys get to see how I'm doing this one. Takin' you on my journey through Episode 27...27 right? yeah..

Okay.. here's what I have so far.

I have an audio clip that is bonifide hilarious to the max that I'm going to throw in somewhere. I was curled into a ball laughing at it and I'm so thankful the person who made it gave me permission to use it on the show. I definitely definitely want to get to share that one with you all.

Need to talk about addiction some more..as if I hadn't beaten it over the head enough time already. I just keep finding out more and more about myself regarding my crazy attraction to WoW.

Had a funny quest introspection to relate...something Britnay said while we were farming for gold on the MetaTalk server.

hmmm...what else.. oh yeah.. Everything under the sun to do after you hit 70... I have a huge list. But this is where I get stumped. My focus for the show is really less and less about WoW mechanics really. I get bored with telling people stuff they probably already know... but at the same time, it can be fun...well you can try to make it sound fun. hehehe.

Must make sure I get all the donation shoutouts lined up. I'm very grateful for the people who donate and I don't want to miss anyone...Waiting on one person for their shoutout at the moment...

Oh yeah Metatalk...can't wait to talk about that...it's been quite an experience so far. And I think the little clique is coming along nicely...I'm starting to remember names and stories.

You should see my little notebook I keep. I have scribbles of writing here and there... one to two word codes sometimes...other times, huge elaborate paragraphs so I don't forget some thought I had...

Also notes on music I want to use...some country music this time around. :) yeah. yeah. yeah. you'll understand later. :P

OH! And new article by Spurlock.

okay..that's what I have so far.

oh yeah..I'm also sick and sound like a frog. :) no joke. Timing is always wonderful.

Tomorrow, step 1 is to align the intro.

wish me luck!

Paladin HPS/MPS

You guys wonder why I have such Paladin envy when it comes to healing? Most of our guild has read this thread from elitistjerks.com

It's a really, really good MUST READ thread for all healers but mostly Paladins to have a greater understanding of how our healing efficiency scales.

(Nadagast-Gnome Warlock, Mal'Ganis)I think one of the major things that people overlook when looking at Paladins and their healing efficiency is the efficiency of Flash of Light. This isn't because of Illumination (well partially but mostly not) it's because all that matters for a particular direct heal's mana efficiency is the base amount of mana per second it uses (in the limit of large amounts of +heal).

This is because you can think of +heal as adding a direct amount of Healing per second to your heals, and your mana cost will be HPS/MPS. The lower MPS is the more efficiently the heal will scale with gear. People like to say that faster heals and faster nukes get less benefit from +dmg or +heal but it's not true at all.

In the case of Flash of Light we have a spell with 180 mana cost and a 1.5 second cast time, so we get 120 mana used per second. This is the reason Flash of Light scales so well. No matter what heal you're spamming (unless it has a cast time reducing talent like GHeal) you'll be getting the same amount of +heal per second....

MetaTalk: Field Trip

The Metatalk Field Trip transcript is up as well as a video montage of the event.
Pics coming soon...

http://metatalks.blogspot.com

Thanks again for coming! Notice all my outfits?! I had fun picking out 4 different ones for a level 3 character. :) I think on an RP server, they should offer more. heh.

Body Language

I was on the other night pretty late trying to grab the chatlog for the MetaTalk transcript. I ran into Xelaere and we started talking about priest builds. We then went back to his server so I could check out his Forsaken Priest. (that sounded dirty)

Anyhow, during the whole conversation, I noticed that our avatars remained within 10 yards of each other and they were almost always facing each other. How interesting that we are so conditioned by RL behavior that we still apply them in environments that don't neccesarily follow the same codes of conduct. You don't really look someone in the eye when you talk in VR. You don't even need to be on the same screen really.

But all the while, we didn't wonder off during the chat. You /em your avatar to make it laugh at jokes and /slap at distasteful remarks. You /goodbye when other people wave goodbye to you. Why?

Well, I know I do it because my avatar represents me in a world my RL body just can't go. And I want to represent myself as best I can. It's also so much easier to be polite and to show kindness. /hug /kiss /cheer /thank /kneel /salute. All things I wouldn't necessarily do in RL even though I am very grateful or intrigued.

And it was almost like if the avatars separated, the chat would be concluded. You show undivided attention by having your avatar focus direction on the person you are engaged with. It's polite for some reason..

I noticed this a lot in MetaTalk too when people would all turn and face the person "speaking"... or they would sit to indicate patience and interest in the speaker.

It was an amusing observation. :)

Hippogryph Hatchling

I got an email today that at first I thought must be a little joke. NO WAY, I said.
No freaking way!

Sean wrote in to say he knew I was partial to pets in the game and that he'd been hangin' onto this one for awhile and never redeemed it. Then wham...he sent me the code to redeem it. "Make sure you give him a good home"

I went straight to booty bay and tried out the code. I could barely type out all the digits I was so excited. Before TBC and I spent a lot of time in Booty Bay, I'd admire the little Hippogryph Hatchling. /pat (since you can't /pet)

Me to my group- "So who wants to buy me the baby Hippogryph? pretty please!"
My group- "keep dreaming"

And now I have the cutie pie all of my own!! WOW!!!

I'm so excited! NO WAY! NO WAY!!!!! NO FREAKING WAY!! TOO F*kING COOL!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH SEAN! /hug

I shall take great care of the little tike and he will enjoy many adventures with me for sure! WOOT! WOOT! WOOT!!!!!! WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Meta Trip

This evening was pretty fun. It was mostly spent with Spurlock and Felix trying to plan out the field tirp for tonight's MetaTalk. A field trip starting in the Red Cloud Mesa Tauren Start zone to The Undercity with a lot of funtoids along the way :)

Should be a nice brain break from the Think Tank last week!
It has been very intersting seeing how the other half lives. I kept saying, "Is that Thunder Bluff?!" to which Spurlock and Felix would say "No." and then I'd see another cluster of shelters and say "Is THAT Thunder Bluff?" To which they kept saying "No."
hahahhaha.

The tour will take somewhere around 1.5-2 hours from what I guess from the mock run. :)
Hope to see you guys there!

UPDATE: XELAERE is going to give us a suprise ending to the Field Trip! I'm very excited to see it!

Thanks Kitch for the link to the Simpson's episode spoof of MMORPGs.

I thought it was kind of funny, not like the South Park episode but just amusing how the MMORPG culture has actually spilled into our Homer culture :)

MetaTalk Meeting 2 Transcripts

Okay. took me awhile but the MetaTalk Meeting 2 Transcripts are up.
Last week we all split into three groups to cover the development and thoughts about the Future of MMORPGs, concerning Classes, Economics, and Player2Player Interactions.

After being able to read through the other group's talk, I was very impressed with what people delved into.

This week, we're doing something a little more fun and less mind tapping. Spurlock the Troll Rogue is taking us all on a field trip to Mulgore and Ogrimaar.

I'm quite excited because as you all know, I know nothing of the Horde side of this game. People keep telling me to check out the sunset in Mulgore so perhaps I shall finally see it! We will be starting in the Tauren start zone...easiest way is to create a lil' cow of course! moooooo!

To view last week's transcripts, please head on over to http://metatalks.blogspot.com

Pictures from last week's meetings are also posted there!

Next Meeting: April 26, 2007 Thursday

Ding Vending Machine

yay. Meh Mage dinged 70! The next Grind is over! DING DONG, the vending machine is 70. I had been carrying the books on me for the moment she hit 70. woot, new water, new food, new arcane brilliance! I'm pretty sure she'll hit a few BG's with Felix's Pally to be the dps bott. But other than that, she'll be passing out food and water. :) I had considered putting her in an Arena team with the Pally but we'll see.

My secret project is also complete. mwahhahhaha. Yes! The grinds are done...now it's time to have fun. I hope.. oh wait.. doh! I forgot. Felix's Pally is still 5 bubbles away from 70. Hopefully we'll get him to 70 before he has to go to class today and THEN.... we shall be UNSTOPPABLE!!! (well, after we gear him)

okay..I think I've had too much sugar. time to relax.

Meta-Pet

I was on MetaTalk tonight getting ready for the meeting today. Someone had mailed me something in the game and I was trying to reply and realized I couldn't because I didn't have enough copper!!

Oh man, being poor after being so rich totally sucks. So Britnay offered to help me farm gold. We created two human rogues and grinded quests and mobs until level 6. Combined, we got 47 silver!

I even tried my hand at RPing. To a level 70 warrior in Goldshire: "Sir, would you be so kind as to spare 40 silver so I may buy a cat?"

He responded: "NO"

Oh well. But luckily by the end of the gold farming spree, we had enough for me to pay 40 silver for my Bombay cat!! WOhoo! And I have enough silver now to reply or write at least 20 in-game mail.

Thanks Britnay for the help!

Be Careful What You Wish For

Okay, So I asked for it. I wanted to do Arena all this week and that's what we've been doing. The downfall of continuous arena practice is that you finally get to playing a much wider variety of teams. You will experience highs and lows of battles. There will be spikes of victory and repeated rounds of losses. That's just how that cookie crumbles.

Tonight, we were just completely mashing and barely pulling it together. We were having repeated arguments with our rogue about the sustained dps vs burst dps. Cooldown ponies have their limitations. Cooldown pony is a class whose abilities do burst dps but then go into a 3min cooldown rotation.

Our dps was not focused tonight at all. Too much crowd control and not enough to give us the 4-5 advantage we always seem to need.

But on the plus side, I started to practice my mass dispel strategy and it worked twice against two pallys and one mage. Very powerful indeed.

But to top off our pretty crappy gameplay night, we kept going against this team who would alpha strike us pretty hard. Alpha strike is supreme burst damage usually consisting of 2 or more cooldown ponies. They won twice and both times they gave us the finger and yelled, NOOBS! YOU GUYS SUCK!!!!

The sad thing is that they're hovering in the 1500 rating like us so the reality is that yes, we suck, but they suck too. lol. Even funnier, it was their pally who kept giving us the finger. LMAO...yeah..as if they know what it's like to have to heal through cloth. :) tsk tsk. (pally envy talking there)

But yeah, you're going to get those types of teams and players. They do it to phase you and of course, get a laugh and make themselves feel a little better. Our childish response back to them was "You guys are so leet. We wish we could be like you"

hahahah. okay..so we stooped down a few notches as well. Besides get pissed off and move on, what can you do?

Anyhow, hopefully tomorrow proves to be a better day for battle.

P.S. Head on over to metatalks.blogspot.com for info on Thursday April 19ths meeting if you're interested.

Who is Alachia?

Who is Alachia? I ask myself all the time actually.
But it's a question I keep getting asked more and more often now. I don't think people want to know who I am in RL or what I look like in RL to judge me. At least the people who are asking don't seem like they'd to that. I think it's more about furthering connection.

I'm like that too. I want to see a real life visual connection to someone I'm talking to. It's as if we aren't socially trained to accept a PURE meta relationship. We need that grounding totem. :) We need the physical existence to help validate the connection. "oh yeah, she's human, she's flawed, she's real"

The problem with a pure meta existence is that your persona automatically has a guassian blur filter applied to it by default. (graphic filter that applies a smooth, slight blur across an image) It makes it easier for people to just "fill in the blanks" as they perceive you. It makes it easier for you to hide your flaws as a RL person and just present your completely controlled meta self.

I like being just "Alachia" to the WoW community. The other me...she's complicated, messed up, deviant, manic depressive, self-loathing, reserved, self-conscious, unsure, and confused. The podcast is simply an "expression of myself" and in no way reflects me in totality for sure. It's one aspect of "me" that loves to delve into my obsession with WoW, the things I observe about the Meta, and my questions about the WoWverse.

I'm guilty myself. Whenever I hear someone on a podcast or a radio show, I immediately try to find a picture of them. I long for the real-ness of people.

I guess the coin is still up in the air and I haven't called heads or tails yet. A part of me just wants to be like, okay, this is me so people won't feel the need to ask but then there's a part of me that still wants to hide underneath my meta-rock. :)

Mind readers

I know the guys don't read my blog or listen to the podcast (except for felix occasionally), so it was really kind of serendipitous yesterday when Taint was like "let's go do Arenas for awhile"....

I was like Hellz yeah! So my little gal shadow priest went out and killed things for awhile to get the DPS out of her system and then she respecced BACK to Holy/Disc. 28/33/0

I love refreshing the arms of my tree. It's really fun playing a class that isn't a one-trick pony. It goes great with my multiple personalities. :)

So we're going to see if we can't break a 1700 rating today. We climbed from 1516 to 1604 last night. It was the first time in two weeks that we weren't going in with a prot warrior, boomkin druid, and shadow priest. Now Sadin is arms/fury, Taint is resto, and I'm Holy/Disc. Felix has been the lucky one since he's maintained his build for the past month 5/7/49 Destruction Warlock. Vish, our rogue, is 17/44/0 combat specced but it's not his main character so he it's not nearly as geared as his pally.

We're still rusty and working on it. But I think that if we keep REALLY practicing, we can push ourselves to an 1800 rating and maybe more. I'm not as optimistic without a pally in our group.

Things I've learned from Arenas from a Holy/Disc Priest perspective:
1. Offensive dispel is your golden ticket. Spec Abolish to reduce the cost of your offensive dispels and defensive dispels
2. Paladins are worthless without their mana. Mana Burn FTW!
3. Mass Dispel makes pally bubbles, BOPs, and Mage's Iceblock weak survivability maneuvers.
4. Prayer of Mending, although nurfed, is still a good temporary insta cast while you're trying to save someone from an alpha attack.
5. DOT if you can.
6. Learn how to do 7 things at once

I haven't mastered doing any of those things but those are all things I noticed I really need to work on to help my party out. Especially number 3. Mass dispel isn't as easy as smashing one button and I have never used it outside of Arena or BGs so I'm pretty darn rusty at it.

Today is Sadin's bday. What better bday present than to get to a 1700 rating!? hahahaha. nah, we're all gonna go out to eat and do the cake thing too...

then we'll go Arena. :D

PvE Burnout

Today I had to wake up early to help get Sadin his last two Primal Nethers to craft his Mooncleaver axe. Both Terrer and Sadin crafted theirs today and put the Savagery enchant on them. Now 2/3 of our arena teams have the tier 2 axes. Too bad we're all still trying to progress through Karazhan.

The whole spec/respec aspect of flpping between the different aspects of the game can be quite frustrating. Am I shadow? Am I holy? Is he prot or is he arms/fury? Is he feral, boomkin, or resto?

I think it's great that Blizzard has given a lot of classes such variety in their class but the respec cost has been very costly for us. It makes it very difficult to be part progression raiding and part Arena team.

I was hoping to spend more time devoted to our 5v5 arena team for next season but I'm not sure how that can happen if we have to spend so much time and in different specs for Kara.

We're actually almost done with Karazhan. We need to down two more bosses but something tells me that it won't end there. So I'm finding myself giving up the more exciting part of WoW for me at this time to commit myself to doing something the majority of my group wants to pursue.

I'm still having fun but I'm truly beginning to believe that PvE is not where my heart is anymore with this game. Maybe it's the Heroic burnout talking though. I could easily be singing a different toon in another week or so. :)

Diary of an Ex-Lootwhore

What makes someone a loot whore? Don't we all want loot? Can any of us say that after running an instance or raiding or pvping that we don't care about loot?

Yes, we all care about loot but ther are a few (maybe more than few) who take the desire for loot to another level. And I'm not sure if it's a bad thing but maybe just a characteristic that leaves a bad feeling in my heart.

I was a loot whore. Yup. About a year ago today actually. The Heart of Hakkar belonged to ME!! MAGES first baby! Priority goes to mages, they NEED it more. They're supposed to top the DPS charts! They're considered noobs if they don't top DPS!

While, mages that fall far behind in the DPS meters are considered "bad", none of those things really have any baring on loot distribution.

I wanted that damn trinket sooo sooo sooo bad. I made up backwards excuses and justifications to prioritize the Heart to mages. I argued with my group and demanded to have my way and it nearly tore us all apart. I have never admitted this to anyone but I was the reason Sadin left the game for two months! I hate admitting it, I do, but you have to understand how ignorant I was...so focused on the loot.

I told Sadin that Warlocks shouldn't get to roll on the Heart, that mages needed it more. I told Taint he had to keep priority on the item for mages. It was all so terrible in retrospect.

Where did I get this stupid idea that this trinket should be prioritized for Mages? The previous raiding guild we were in, the raid leader said the mages would get priority on the Heart of Hakkar. It stuck in my head and I never bothered to question it.

But after seeing my group shake up and so much grief befall everyone, I really came to understand how insignificant ALL of the meta-materials were. I also started understanding that ALL classes can REALLY USE the Heart of Hakkar, mages, locks, hunters, and even healers and tanks! I was TOTALLY wrong.

I'm kind of glad it came down the way it did. Now my philosophy on loot is, if you can use it and don't plan on banking it for all eternity, please roll on it! I don't even want to hear any arguments about efficiency for certain classes. It's like nails on a chalk board now when I hear someone say "well, he is the main healer, he should have it."

Epic and Blue GEAR is great but I promise you, you can f-ing do almost anything with semi-decent threads.

Someone emailed me recently saying how they thought they needed full dungeon 3 sets to run Karazhan. You do NOT have to be geared out for Karazhan. You can go in with mostly greens with proper stats. It's about execution. I know this, because it's what my group did. Half of us had barely hit 70.

Blizzard did a great job with TBC in making gear very comparable with spikes here and there from trinkets and weapons...but the disparity isn't that great. Don't get me wrong, I hate feeling inadequate. I don't want to be the crappy healer who only has +200 healing or a crappy shadow priest who can't climb over the prot warrior's damage. That would be humiliating. I've had guildmates make fun of my green gear when I first hit 70. But I stacked the best stats I could and performed to the best of my ability and did very well.

Loot is great but it doesn't make you a great player. It can make you a better player but it can't make you a great player. I've seen this geared out mage burn the DPS charts like no tomorrow but was completely worthless for crowd control, decursing, and survivability. Great gear, but only an okay player imo.

But I do understand the lure. I understand what it means to feel like you really really deserve an item and you just can't get your hands on it. Part of me scoffs at lootwhores now. But there's still a part of me that totally sympathizes.

I've heard people make all sorts of horrible commentary because the loot bug grabs them. And no matter how much I try to talk someone down from it, they're just not going to be happy until they obtain their material object of affection.

Meta-Success

WoW. It was a great evening. Very unexpected turn out..approx 30 people showed up. It was quite overwhelming. It definitely goes on my chart as one of the most humbling experiences.

I think about 21 shared their stories and everyone was quite polite and listened. I agree with Igoo's comment about being more interactive and faster pace. But this first one was just me putting feelers out there and honestly testing to see if I could even do it. I really do want to get know everyone better. The stories were great!

Next week's topic should allow for smaller groups to interact on a closer level with more real-time discussion as opposed to story macros. This was the get-to-know-the-group meeting. Next week we can start engaging.

My idea for next Thursday is to have a THINK TANK format in which we brainstorm to come up with idea for the next evolution of MMORPGs. People will be split into groups to take on a certain aspect of the MMORPG and at the end of the night, we'll see what we have collectively come up with.

A lot of people mentioned Vent and creating a guild.

My thoughts on that for now...
Guild: I had initially wanted to create a guild to do the event but had major second thoughts on it. The idea of MetaTalk is for people with similar thinking to be able to share experiences and ideas with one another. Its goal isn't about leveling, raiding, PvP, or any real game mechanics. The major con to forming a guild is that it might encourage people to level their characters on the server which I am not opposed to at all, but I am in no way capable of leading a "real in-game" guild on another server. My heart and responsiblity still belong to JAE and my core four. :) And I'd feel terrible if people thougth I was abandoning the principles of MetaTalk.

My hope is that people do make friends and acquaintances from MetaTalk and perhaps some will go off to form a guild or maybe even level with each other in the future. I think that would be awesome. For now though, my hope is to keep game mechanics out of the MetaTalk agenda so I can pick all of your brains!

Vent: Oye. I'd love to be able to chat with everyone and have everyone chat freely so we can alleviate all the type type typing! But I'm just not equipped to handle managing a voice over meeting at this time. First, my shyness would come off as aloofness and I'd probably not do so well regulating via voice. But I belive that as I get to know everyone better and everyone else gets to know each other better, it could be very possible in the future. In fact, I'm sure of it.

Again, it was TRES AWESOME!! I was so excited and it took me like the full clear of Heroic Mechanar to finally calm down. :) (3 more primal nethers for Sadin to go!)

Thanks to everyone who came out!! You guys are amazing.

MetaTalk Tonight

Okay. I'm getting really nervous. I'm a total socialphobe.
I feel like puking. lol. No joke. What's wrong with me? Why can't I be more social?
sigh. well this will be a good experiment for me for sure.

Tonight, as I was logged on to MetaTalk to set up some macros, I got a tell from someone who had just created an alt on the server. We ended up chatting in The Park for a good two hours! So I guess MetaTalk has already worked! lol! We discussed the possible future MMOs, determinism vs free will, and good food in Texas :)

Virtual Prostitution

Have you guys read that post about the chic who made a craig's list ad asking for 5000 gold for an Epic mount. You buy her an Epic Mount and she'll mount you!!!

We had so much fun with this post in guild. You can imagine...

"Please send pic and be real and drug\disease free with 5000 gold on laughing skull server."

"So talk all the trash you want, I got MY Epic flying mount AND I got laid which is more than most of you failures can ever hope for."

"I play a level 70 night elf druid and would prefer someone who was into roleplaying (I have a costume!) but honestly anyone will do.."

L-M-A-O!!!

yeah yeah..it's probably not real but it's still hilarious.

Chess Event

A few weeks ago, I was thinking to myself, wouldn't be awesome if Kara had some kind of "potter" fight in it where you do a chess board fight. hahahha. And sure enough, when we started Kara a few weeks ago, I was reading through the fights and saw the Chess Event. It's super fun.

I hear it can be soloed. But for us, we just had so much fun. People were trying to explain each piece and the strategies when Taint was like "let's just go!" and picked a piece and started the event. All you do is choose a piece and a pet bar opens up and you play each piece. I was the cleric until it died and then I was a footman. hehehe.

I think Blizzard put this event in Kara for a mini-break from the progression raiding. Free epics essentially. :) woot!

We're currently working on Netherspite. We just learned the positioning of the fight. Apparently there are like three beams and you can never let the green beam hit the boss..cuz it heals him like a biotch. Don't cross the beams!! :)

For people progressing through Kara, we've found www.bosskillers.com to be a damn useful site.

WoWcast Vids: Discovery 1

New WoWcast Vids session. I'm calling it Discovery.
It will cover game exploration and discovery...old and new.

I found this a few weeks ago while farming waters in Shadowmoon Valley.
I don't know what it's about really since I know ZERO lore.

Pretty scary though when I first came across it....an army of Infernals..

Gold Mafia FTL

Over the last month, these whispers and in-game mails are becoming daily. I get about 3-4 whispers a night now and at least one in-game mail a day.

I wonder if all servers are getting it now or just ours. Maybe it's based off of how many people on your server have a record of buying gold or getting power-leveled.

Anyhow, it's a new feature to the game. I wonder if Blizz will try to stop it or if its unstoppable.

WoWcast Arena Session 6

I could do a whole show about the Pally-Envy that goes on in my guild.
hehehe. anyhow, we tried out having a paladin in our 5v5.

wow...kick ass. I <3 Paladins! I'm also happy to report that Felix's paladin is now level 66. Hopefully, he'll be ready for next Arena Season. I got my Gladiator Mooncloth Robe this week. This will probably be the only Gladiator piece I get this season. :(
My resilience is 219 though!

We went 9-2 with the paladin...and then we switched back the rogue in...and went 0-5.
Totally not the rogue's fault...I suck and can't solo heal Arenas yet. Someone teach me how to stay alive while being spell interrupted/focus-dpsed non-stop for the first 10 seconds of the match. pretty please.

The problem was I couldn't stay alive for the first seconds of those matches. They would see Warrior, Rogue, Warlock, Boomkin, Holy Priest...and ALL the teams focus fired me like a biotch. I couldn't even get a heal off on myself. I saw one team in the top 20 of our battlegroup have a feral druild/priest healing combo. Is that priest really solo healing?
